I'm a vocal advocate for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elastic_tabstop">elastic tabstops</a>, or at least seeing them implemented in an editor that I can use.

    <li>it would allow programmers to use proportional fonts -- Knuth used proportional fonts when laying out the code in his books
    <li>sometimes I find myself opening up Excel to rough out an idea -- if only just to lay things out in a table structure.  But I don't like using something so overkill for such an easy task. Elastic tabstops, in some ways, unifies the simple text editor with spreadsheets.  (granted, it doesn't include the <A href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dataflow#Software_architecture">formula processing</a>, just the layout functionality)
